What can I do with an NO/NC relay switch and how do I make it wireless?

WebStore4 sells many products that can send or receive a wired switching signal. In most cases the signal is made by a built-in relay. The relay can switch NO (Normally Open) in which the connection is not closed in the resting position or NC (Normally Closed) in which the connection is closed in the resting position. Some examples of products with NO/NC switching ability:
  1. An access control device (IP video intercom outdoor station, card reader, keypad, fingerprint scanner, face recognition, etc.) for controlling an electric lock or gate
  2. An electric strike, door magnet or automatic door opener
  3. An IP camera with an alarm input and/or output
  4. A Network Video Recorder with an alarm input and/or output
  5. An IP video intercom indoor monitor for controlling an extra chime or alarm
  6. Universal detectors such as Active Infrared Beams (AIR), passive infrared (PIR), radar
  7. Universal sirens
  8. Alarm system control panel or detector with an alarm input and/or output
  9. Smart Home products
The NO/NC relay can often be switched by a manual command such as remote control of an electric door lock with a mobile app. The relay can often also be switched automatically based on for example motion detection by a detector or IP camera.

Some products can control another device based on a wireless and software integration such as a motion sensor or magnetic contact that sends a wireless signal to an IP PTZ camera or an alarm system that sends a wireless signal to a smart switch for a lamp so it to turn on in the event of an alarm. There are also numerous Smart Home solutions where a wireless signal is sent to a switch based on, for example, a time schedule or event. Almost always these systems are limited to only the products of one manufacturer or platform. Sometimes there is the option to connect to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or make an IFTTT integration.

With a NO or NC relay a universal and simple hardware integration can be made between products in different product segments and/or of different manufacturers.

In order to connect devices in a system they must of course have an NO or NC input or output. The wired signal of a NO or NC circuit is not protected.

Making the NO / NC relay switching wireless

WebStore4 offers a solution to make the signal of a relay wireless. The solution from the WL4 brand consists of a small transmitter and receiver that operate on the 433Mhz frequency. The transmitter is powered by a battery and the receiver by a 12VDC power supply. The transmitter and receiver have 2 separate channels for operating the two relays on the receiver separately. Each relay on the receiver can switch a maximum of 2300W (AC).

Up to 128 transmitters can be connected to 1 receiver. The number of receivers for 1 transmitter is only limited by the transmission range. Any configuration between transmitter and receiver is possible: 1: 1, 1: N, N: 1, N: N.

Three modes are possible: monostable (the relay is on as long as the transmitter is activated), bistable (a momentary activation of the transmitter causes a change in the state of the relay) and time based (the momentary activation of the transmitter causes the state of the relay to change for a certain time).

The wireless switching solution is ideal for access or alarm systems in which it is not desirable or possible to use cables.
